Learn To Row Camp

Is Rowing For You? Come Find Out!

Have you been trying to decide if rowing is the sport for you, but don’t want to make a commitment before you even know if you will like it? Then this is for you…

The Mt. Lebanon HS Rowing team is offering you the opportunity to attend our Learn-to-Row camp. No Experience Necessary! The week-long camp is open to all MTLSD students in Grades 8-12 and will give you the chance to find out more about the sport and to actually try it out.

The camp will consist of:

  • Land time getting an overview of rowing and touring the boathouse
  • Learning the basics of the stroke on a rowing machine
  • Practice carrying the shell to the dock so you know how to handle the equipment
  • Finally, getting on the water in a racing shell and having on-water practice time (multiple sessions)

By the time the camp ends you will have gotten a full hands-on experience, similar to what the team does everyday at practice. And you will know a lot more about rowing than you did on Day 1.

We will be offering the camp three times this summer, so if one of the weeks doesn’t work for you there are other chances to make it. And if you liked it the first time, feel free to return again for another week.

NOTE:  A swim test is required prior to getting on the water. We arrange the test.

**Session III Test Dates & Times**
Because we will be getting out on the river during the camp a swim test is required.  The test is not just to demonstrate that you know how to swim, but to also show that you can complete certain tasks in the unlikely event that you end up in the water.
Here are the details:
Where: Mt. Lebanon Pool (at the Rec Center)
Friday August 17 @ 7pm
Saturday August 18 @ 12:15pm
In the event bad weather closes the pool early on test day we will work with the pool to schedule a makeup time.
The Test:
You’ll need to bring a sweatshirt and sweatpants for part of the test.
– 50 yards continuous swim, any stroke
– 5 minute continuous treading water wearing sweats
– While treading water, put on a life jacket and secure it
After completing the test you get a completed form that you will need to turn in at the first session.
Go to the Rec Center Pool, give your name to the cashier and explain that you are there for the Crew swim test.  You can only stay at the pool for the test and then must exit the pool.
Go to the lifeguard table/room and ask for Ryker DiDonato.  If he is not there, ask for the supervising lifeguard and explain that you need a swim test for Crew; the forms and life jackets will be in the guard room.  Call Chris O’Matz if there are any concerns or problems (412-200-8064).
